Longarm’s voice cracked and died. The overpowering sense of his personal loss was so intense he couldn’t read another word. “Trixie, shoot me if you have to because I can’t read anymore.”

“Let me see the letter.”

He gave it to her and as Trixie read, Longarm saw that her eyes began to glisten. She got so choked up that she couldn’t finish it either. Sniffling and blinking back tears, the woman choked out, “Jeezus, that is romantic. Custis, you were telling the truth. Only a woman could write something that good. I’d give anything if I could write romantic shit like that.”

“Me too,” Longarm said, retrieving his letter.

Trixie expelled a shuddering sigh. “You and that rich gal must have really been in love.”

“We were.”

The woman waved her gun at the unconscious man. “And you think old spaghetti-dick there was one of the men who murdered Miss Bonner and her family?”

“No, I do not.”

“Then why did you hit him like that?”

“Let me explain.”

“Okay, but that letter cut me to the gizzard. I need a drink. Would you like one too?”

The letter had also affected him powerfully, and Longarm realized he would have been better off to burn it. “I guess a drink might help.”

“Then you tell Trixie all about her ... if you don’t mind.”

Longarm poured the whiskey, which was superb. He drank and discovered he really needed to talk. So he told the sympathetic prostitute everything about himself and Elizabeth. His anguished words poured out in a torrent. By the time that he was finished, they were practically crying on each other’s shoulder.

Trixie was hugging him. “Honey, do you feel better now?”

“I do.”

“I sure wish that I was Elizabeth Bonner and you were marrying me. I’m half drunk and half in love with you already.”

It wasn’t until he tried to stand that Longarm realized that they’d drained half the bottle and that he was tipsy. “I’d better go.”

She slipped into a dress and buttoned it up the front. “Where?”

“Aunt Nellie is putting me up.”

“I got a place two doors down the hallway.”

He looked sideways at Trixie. “You live here?”

“Sure. My room isn’t quite as big or fancy as this one, but it’s nice. You see, in exchange for the exclusive privilege of entertaining the hotel’s guests, half of what I make goes to the hotel. I also get a free room with fresh linen supplied daily. The arrangement works for them and it works for me.”

“I’m glad.”

“Come on, honey,” Trixie said, taking his hand. “I got another bottle down there and we’ll drink and cry a little more. You need a woman’s love real bad and you’ll feel a lot better for it tomorrow.”

“I’m not too sure.” He pulled back from her. “I ... I’m not even sure that I can be with a woman, and I won’t pay for it, Trixie.”

“It’s on the house,” Trixie announced as they stepped over the man who was just beginning to stir, before locking the door behind them. “You rescued me from that pompous old fart, and now I’m going to rescue you from the past.
